How to upgrade an eligible PS4 game to the digital PS5 version

Certain PlayStation®4 games can be upgraded to the digital PlayStation®5 version of the game on a PS5® console. 

When using a PS5 console, you may have the option to upgrade a disc or digital PS4® game to the digital PS5 version. Depending on the game, this upgrade may occur at no additional cost, may require a purchase, and may be available for a limited time. An internet connection is required.

How to upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc on a PS5 console with a disc drive

To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PS5 Digital Edition console.

  1. Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console (or create an account).
  2. Insert the eligible PS4 game disc.
  3. Go to the game hub for the PS4 game.
  4. Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
  5. Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content.
  6. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.

To upgrade a PS4 game disc to the digital PS5 version, your PS4 game disc needs to be for the same country/region as your account for PlayStation™Network. If you have problems upgrading, please check the country/region your account was set up for via the residential address in Account Management.

Upgrade an eligible PS4 digital game on a PS5 console with a disc drive or PS5 Digital Edition console

To upgrade an eligible digital PS4 game you already own to the digital PS5 version:

  1. Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console.
  2. Find the PS5 game in PlayStation Store, or using Search, and go to the game hub for the PS5 game.
  3. Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
  4. Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content.
  5. After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 game.

Please note, PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation®Plus benefit aren't eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless otherwise indicated.

Switching between PS5 and PS4 versions on your PS5 console

If you own the PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game, here's how to switch between them:

  1. From the Games home screen, go to Game Library. 
  2. Highlight the game and press the X button.
  3. Select [...] to view options. 
  4. Select the version of the game you want to download or play.

Please note, if you're unsure of what version of the game you're viewing on this screen:

  • PS4 versions display PS4 beside the game title at the top of the screen.
  • PS5 versions only display the game title.

Art books, Soundtracks, and other extras

If you're looking for art books, game soundtracks, or other extras included with your purchase, follow these steps to access them: 

  1. From the Games home screen, go to Game Library. 
  2. Highlight the game and press the X button.
  3. Select [...] to view options. 
  4. Select the extra content you want to access. 

Repeat these steps to switch back to your game, or other extra content.
