Learn how to set up your PlayStation®4 console for the first time, update the system software and connect to PlayStation™Network.

How to set up your PS4 console

  1. Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT port on the back of your PS4® console.
  2. Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on your screen.
  3. Insert the power cable into the AC IN port on the back of your PS4 console.
  4. Safely insert the power plug into the power outlet.

After turning on your PS4 console for the first time, follow the on-screen instructions to:

  1. Connect your controller.
  2. Select your language.
  3. Set up your internet connection.
    If you've connected your PS4 console to the internet successfully using an ethernet cable, you automatically proceed to the next step.
  4. Connect the PlayStation Camera.
    Select Skip to set it up later.
  5. Set the time zone.
  6. Set the date and time.
  7. Configure power saving settings.
  8. Read and accept the user agreement.

You can connect your PS4 console to the internet using a wired or wireless connection.

How to update PS4 system software

Before you can access any online features on your PS4 console, you need to update the system software to its latest version. System software updates begin downloading automatically as soon as they’re available, and an on-screen notification will inform you when it’s ready to install.

If you’re already a PlayStation player, you can use your existing account details to sign in. If you’re new to PlayStation, you can use your PS4 console to create an account.

How to download and access PS4 games and apps

You can download games and apps from the PlayStation™Store, or use a game disc to install a game.

  1. Insert the game disc. The game will install automatically.
  2. Select the game from your home screen to start playing.

Please note, you will need to insert the game disc when playing the game.

How to start playing online with your PS4 console

Some games require a PlayStation®Plus subscription to access online multiplayer. To play online with your friends, as well as gain access to a variety of other benefits, you can subscribe to PlayStation Plus.
