Transfer data from a PS4 console or PS5 console to your PS5 console

Transfer data from a PS4 console or PS5 console to your PS5 console

You can transfer (copy) data from a PlayStation®4 console or another PlayStation®5 console to your PS5™ console.

The console that you're transferring data from is the source console. The PS5 console that you're transferring data to is the destination console.

Prepare for the transfer process

Make sure to do the following on your source console before you start the transfer process:

  1. Sign in to the same account that's signed in on your destination console.
  1. Update the system software to its latest version
  1. Synchronize your trophy information.
  1. Connect your source console and your destination console to the same network. Use commercially available LAN cables or connect wirelessly (Wi-Fi®).
This diagram is an example of both consoles connecting wirelessly.
A) Network

Connect both consoles to the same modem or router, and transfer your data wirelessly.

If your consoles usually connect to your network wirelessly, you can transfer data from your source console to the destination console faster by using a LAN cable (sold separately). If both consoles are connected to the network using a wired connection, there's no need to connect the consoles to each other with a LAN cable.

B) HDMI cableUse the included HDMI cable to connect to your destination console. There's no need to connect your source console to your TV.
C) Power cordUse the power cords that came with your source PS4 console or PS5 console and your destination console.

Important

  • Do not turn off your source and destination consoles during data transfer. Doing this may cause data to be damaged or lost.
  • Do not change your network settings or run internet connection tests during data transfer. Doing this may cause data to be damaged or lost.
  • You can only transfer data from one PS4 console or PS5 console to one PS5 console.

Transfer your data

If you want to transfer data during the initial setup of your PS5 console, follow the on-screen instructions when you get to the data transfer stage.

If you want to transfer data after the initial setup has been completed, follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure that your source console is on. On your destination console, go to the home screen and select Settings > System > System Software.
  2. Select Data Transfer > Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Your destination console automatically restarts during data transfer. You can start using the console after it restarts. Some data, such as game data, is still transferring even after the console restarts.
  • When a game is ready to play, a thumbnail of the game appears in your games home. You can select the thumbnail to play the game while other data is still transferring.
  • To check the progress of the data transfer, go to the control center, and then select Downloads/Uploads.

What data can I transfer to my PS5 console?

  • Login passcodes on your source console also transfer to your destination console. When logging in to your destination console, enter the same passcode.
  • Any game or saved data that's already saved on your destination console doesn't transfer.

Other ways to transfer data

You can save time by accessing your game and saved data after the data transfer is complete.

  • For digital games, you can download them from the game library of your destination console.
  • For disc-based games, insert the disc into your destination console to install the game.
  • If you're using a USB extended storage drive on your source console, simply connect it to your destination console to access your game data.
  • If you installed an M.2 SSD to your source PS5 console, you can remove the M.2 SSD and install it to your destination console to use the game data that's saved on it.
  • If you're a PlayStation Plus member, you can download saved data from cloud storage.
  • You can copy PS4 game saved data from your source console to a USB drive, and then use the USB drive to copy the data to your destination console. If you already have saved data for the same game on your PS5 console, you can replace it with the saved data from your USB drive.
You can't copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.

Can I transfer data to a PS5 console with a child account?

If you're using a child account, you can't transfer data during initial setup of your destination console. Transfer data from a child account on your source console in the following ways.

  • Complete initial setup for a child account, and then transfer data.
  • Use an adult account for initial setup. Then, transfer data from both the adult account and the child account during the initial setup process.
