Freegunner Essentials: Tips & Tricks

Understanding the deep strategy behind Concord's hectic 5v5 team play is key to outplaying your rivals - here's what you need to know.

Welcome to the Concord Galaxy

Welcome aboard the Northstar, Freegunners! As part of a team of skilled space outlaws, you'll face off against rival crews and tackle high-stakes jobs. Familiarizing yourself with each Freegunner is the first step, but to take your skills to the next level, you’ll want to explore and experiment with different Freegunner Roles, Crew Bonuses, Variants, and Crew Builder combinations.
These systems give you the freedom to play the way you want, offering a ton of versatility in how you show up in a match on your own, with your team, and against rivals.

Know your crew

Freegunner roles

All Freegunners have a role on the crew, a job that they’re best at. Like a crew, a team often benefits from diversifying across roles.

Ranger

Versatile and highly adept, Rangers are effective across a range of scenarios, mixing solid offensive capabilities with traversal abilities to meet all situations head-on.

Example: Teo

Warden

Specialized in ranged attacks, Wardens control chokepoints and sightlines from a distance, creating opportunities for the rest of the crew.

Example: Vale

Haunt

Highly mobile and wildly unpredictable, Haunts can close ground rapidly and scatter a rival crew with shock tactics and lethal finesse.

Example: It-Z

Breacher

The Northstar’s equivalent of a battering ram, breachers bring weight and force to the party, pushing forward against intense opposition and shattering enemy defenses.

Example: Star Child

Anchor

Steadfast and stalwart, Anchors are built to hold ground, defend an area, and act as a rallying point for the rest of the team.

Example: 1-OFF

Tactician

Bending the battlefield to their advantage, Tacticians bolster the rest of their crew with deployables that keep them ahead of the rest.

Know your advantages

Crew Bonuses

Crew bonuses are small, cumulative bonuses that add a strategic element to Freegunner Selection. You gain bonuses based on the roles of the Freegunners you select during a round.
As the match progresses, swap characters (and roles) to stack Crew Bonuses, making your Freegunners more versatile and powerful. Stacking Crew Bonuses in different orders or prior to picking certain Freegunners can be especially advantageous. For example, you might want to activate the Tactician Crew Bonus – Faster Reload Speed - before playing Freegunners with slower reload times, like Star Child or Emari.

Ranger: Improved weapon recoil 

Warden: Longer weapon range

Haunt: Improved mobility

Breacher: Faster dodge cooldown

Anchor: Increased healing recieved

Tactician: Faster reload speed

Unlocking greater advantages

Freegunner Variants

As you play, you’ll be able to earn Variants for each Freegunner. Variants put a unique spin on each of our characters by giving them small modifiers to their skills and load-outs.
These traits can have wide-ranging impacts, like boosting your abilities’ effects, increasing the amount of ammo and ability charges you have available, and entirely new passives. These Variants can help you play certain Freegunners in situations where they previously might not have been the best pick.

Stay flexible

The Crew Builder

Every job is different, so why bring the same crew every time?

Once you reach level six, you’ll unlock The Crew Builder. This is where you’ll head to create custom crews to bring into your matches. You can select different Freegunners and Variants depending on how you want to play. It’s always good to have a variety of roles on your crew so you can accumulate as many Crew Bonuses as possible.

Crew Building is a little bit like deck building. There's lots of room to experiment and strategize on how you want to build your crew depending on the mode or playstyle you feel like playing, particularly as more Freegunners and Variants are added over time.

Other key Crew Builder Tips:

Spending your slots on multiple stocks of the same Variant can give you a leg up in modes that use the Freegunner Knockout rule.  If you win a round, you can’t pick that same character, but if you have another variant of that same character in your lineup, you can!

Having multiple stocks of the same Freegunner doesn’t help you in respawn modes and may make it harder to rack up Crew Bonuses. So it’s a good idea to also build a crew with all unique variants for respawn modes.

The order of your Freegunners also matters because your leftmost Freegunner is your default choice during Freegunner Select. If you put your favorite character there, then you’re covered if you find yourself AFK as Freegunner Select begins.

One Final Tip: Make Use of Persistent Deployables

Whether it's looking to extract a Blue Buddy, hold down a site, or get the most kills, every crew is competing for something. Some Freegunners can deploy walls, healing pads, surveillance traps, and lay spores that persist between rounds and respawns. Use these strategically to block off enemies, get your team into the fight more quickly, or de-buff rivals at critical control zones.
