How to update system software on a PS5 console

How to update the PS5 console system software

Set up automatic updates or manually update your system software by following the steps below.

  1. Go to Settings > System.
  2. Select System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
    Update Available appears if a newer version is available.
  3. Select Update System Software to update.

If you experience multiple failed downloads, please follow the Update PS5 system software using a PC or Mac instructions below.

If a system software update is stuck, restart the download by following the steps below. 

  1. Press the PS button on your wireless controller to go to the control centre and select Downloads/Uploads.
  2. Highlight the system software update and select View Error Info, then Try Again.

If you experience multiple failed downloads, please follow the Update PS5 system software using a PC or Mac instructions below.

If restarting the system software download fails, follow the instructions below.

  1. Turn off your PS5 console.
  2. Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named "PS5" on a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
  3. Download the PS5 console update file below and save it in the "UPDATE" folder. Save the file as "PS5UPDATE.PUP".
    * There must be approximately 1,1GB of free space.
  4. Plug the USB drive containing the file into your PS5 console.
  5. Start your PS5 console in Safe Mode: press and hold the power button, releasing after the second beep.
  6. Select Update System Software.
  7. Select Update from USB Storage Device > OK.

If your PS5 console does not recognize the file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name using uppercase letters.

How to reinstall the PS5 console system software

Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console. This process is often referred to as a "factory" reset, or "hard" reset.

  1. Turn off your PS5 console.
    Press and hold the power button until your console beeps.
  2. Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named "PS5" on a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
  3. Download the reinstallation file below and save it in the "UPDATE" folder. Save the file as "PS5UPDATE.PUP".
    There must be approximately 1,2GB of free space.
  4. Plug the USB drive containing the file into the PS5 console.
  5. Start your PS5 console in Safe Mode: press and hold the power button, releasing after the second beep.
  6. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

If your PS5 console does not recognize the file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name using uppercase letters.
