Go Super Saiyan as the planet-shattering adventures of Dragon Ball Z’s iconic protagonist Goku arrive on PlayStation 4. What is Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and what makes it so special? Let’s take a look:
ESRB TEEN: Violence, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a third-person action RPG from the developer of the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Take control of legendary hero Son Goku (or ‘Kakarot’ to give him his true name) in a huge, free-roaming adventure that pits you against some of the series’ most dastardly villains.
Team up with a myriad of familiar faces from the anime series as you explore, level-up, tackle side quests, learn powerful new techniques, and unlock your true Saiyan abilities.
In contrast to previous games like Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Dragon Ball FighterZ, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is as much about the story, world, and characters as it is about the over-the-top action.
Explore multiple regions from the Dragon Ball Z universe, tackling enemies, completing quests, hunting down collectibles, and progressing the story.
Meet up with popular characters from the series and complete their quests to unlock new back stories to the original saga and uncover hidden Easter eggs.
Take time-out from fisticuffs to go fishing, hunt for food, rustle up a meal, practice your baseball swing, or even learn to drive.
None of which is to say you won’t be unleashing a Kamehameha or two.
Combat is an integral part of the adventure and you’ll face off against some truly formidable foes, learning new techniques and combos, and teaming up with familiar characters to take them down.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a celebration of some of the anime series’ best-loved moments, following Son Goku in his intergalactic battles with some of the most dangerous adversaries in the universe.
You play as the legend himself and spend time developing your abilities and raising your power level as you work to take down larger-than-life foes like Majin Buu, Kid Buu, Frieza, Cell, and more, in dramatic, narrative-driven battles adapted from the manga.
Move through different regions within Dragon Ball’s world as you progress, visiting familiar locations like Orange City, Lucca Village, and Master Roshi’s house.
Many of Dragon Ball Z’s most beloved characters will be making an appearance in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, some with their own unique questlines to pursue, some that can join in combat encounters, and others that are fully playable.
You can take up to two support characters into battle with you, each with their own unique perks. These include:
One of Goku’s closest allies and a reliable joker, Krillin can blind and stun enemies with a Solar Flare ability and dish out damage at range using his tracking Distructo Disc.
A former student of Kame-Sennin and reformed bandit, Yamcha can draw an enemy’s attention for strategic play or restrain an enemy with his homing Spirit Ball ability.
A former rival of Goku’s and a talented fighter, Tien can inflict serious damage with his Tri-Beam or stun enemies by unleashing his Solar Flare.
A former student of Master Shen who later defects, Chiaotzu has considerable telekinetic abilities and can restrain opponents for long periods of time while you land multiple combos.
Aside from support characters there’s also a number of different playable characters, each of whom have their own move-sets to master and story missions to pursue throughout the game. They include:
Goku’s skilled and courageous son, Gohan is highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat and has several short-range skills that can be used to connect combos and decimate opponents’ health bars.
A mysterious member of the extra-terrestrial Namekian species, Piccolo is a robust combatant with high health and excellent defence who can hold his own against larger enemy groups thanks to his Explosive Wave ability.
The proud prince of the Saiyans and Goku’s ongoing rival, Vegeta is a master of Ki-Blast related attacks. His Multiple Energy Blast ability rains Ki-Blast damage on a small area, great for one-on-one fights or clustered enemies.
Absolutely! As you unlock your abilities in-game you can not only unleash your Saiyan form but, beyond the initial transformation, you can also power up all the way to Super Saiyan III.
On top of this, you'll also be able to take control of super-powered fusion fighters like Vegito and Gotenks that draw on the power of two warriors in a single form to take down the deadliest enemies.
Best of all, as you unleash your awesome power, the destructible environments tear apart from the force.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is developed by CyberConnect2 – a veteran Japanese studio with a long history of creating bombastic, anime-style action games like the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm series, Asura’s Wrath, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven.
Drawing on over two decades of experience in creating action games, the team has worked directly from original DBZ artist Akira Toriyama’s designs to create a truly authentic rendition of the fan-favorite series.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available on Blu-Ray through local retailers or digitally via PlayStation Store.
