How to charge your controller or accessory on PlayStation consoles

Find out how to charge your controller or compatible accessory using your console.

While your PlayStation®5 console or PlayStation®4 console is on or in rest mode, connect a compatible controller or accessory to your console using the included USB cable to start charging.

How to charge your controller while your PS5 console is in rest mode

  1. Go to the home screen and select Settings > System.
  2. Select Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode
  3. Set Supply Power to USB Ports to Always or 3 Hours.
If you're using a console from the CFI-2000 model group, you can select Adaptive.
  1. Go to Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
  2. Select Supply Power to USB Ports.
If you select 3 hours, power will be supplied to USB ports only for 3 hours after entering rest mode. After 3 hours, the console lowers its power consumption to save energy.
  • When charging while your console is in rest mode, the light bar on your controller* slowly blinks orange. After charging is complete, the light bar turns off.
  • You can also charge your controller by connecting it to your computer or other USB devices using a USB cable. Be sure to use a USB cable that complies with USB standards. You may not be able to charge your controller on some devices.

*The status indicators on the PS VR2 Sense® controller and the PlayStation®Move motion controller slowly blink white while charging.

How to put your PS5 console in rest mode

  1. Press the PS button to go to the control center and select Power.
  2. Select Enter Rest Mode.
You can also press the power button once to enter rest mode.
  1. Select Power from the function screen.
  2. Select Enter Rest Mode.
You can also press and hold the power button until the console beeps.
  • To exit rest mode, turn on your console.

Adaptive charging on PS5 consoles

Select Adaptive to optimize the charging time based on your controller's remaining battery level, allowing you to save more power than charging with the 3 Hours or Always options.

  • This setting is available only on consoles from the CFI-2000 model group.
  • To charge your controller, connect it to the USB Type-C port on your PS5 console with the included USB Type-C cable.
  • Adaptive charging can be used with your DualSense® wireless controller, DualSense Edge® wireless controller, PS VR2 Sense controller, and Access™ controller.
  • The charging time adjusts to the remaining battery level of the controller you connected before your console enters rest mode.
  • If you connect a different device, it may not charge, or it may not charge with optimized charging time.
  • When in rest mode, power stops being supplied if no device is connected after a certain amount of time.
