הסופר הטרוד אלן ווייק יוצא למסע נואש לחיפוש אחר אשתו הנעדרת, אליס. לאחר היעלמותה המסתורית מהעיירה ברייט פולז שבצפון-מערב הפסיפי, הוא מגלה דפים מסיפור אימה שלכאורה הוא כתב, אך אינו זוכר דבר מכך.
