חדרו אל תוך עולם דיגיטלי מרהיב במשחק פלטפורמה האקרי מבוסס סיור

מדע בדיוני תלת ממדי בהשראת Metroidvania, Recompile מציג קרבות אינטנסיביים, מנגנוני פלטפורמה מדויקים, יכולות-על ומנגנון האקינג סביבתי יוצא דופן. מכשולים רבים, עד לרמת היריבים, ניתן לתמרון ולעקוף.

העלילה חוקרת רבדים רבים, החל ממודעות המכונות ועד אופיה של המציאות. השחקן, פיסת קוד חצי-מודעת נמלטת, מוצאת עצמה לכודה במיינפריים (המחשב המרכזי) - שממה דיגיטלית עצומה הנחושה למחוק כל מסיג גבול.

Recompile מבוסס על מנגנון עלילתי ייחודי לז'אנר. שלא כמו Metroidvania טיפוסי, תוצאות המשחק הן דינמיות בהתאם לסגנון המשחק של השחקן, כלומר, החלטות השחקן משנות את העולם ויכולות להוביל לכל אחד ממספר סיומים.
